About
Welcome to the Japanese Extensive Reading Club (JERC)! We are located in Honolulu, Hawaii. However, people outside of Honolulu can also use this site for resources, ideas, and activities to help them get started with extensive reading.
What is Extensive Reading?
This extensive reading club was created to foster more opportunities for Japanese learners (and Japanese English learners) to practice and ENJOY reading in Japanese and English. The core principles of Extensive Reading are as follows:
1. YOU choose what you want to read
2. If you aren’t enjoying one book, toss it aside and get another.
3. Read as much as possible
4. The purpose of reading is generally for enjoyment, information, and general understanding
5. Reading is generally faster rather than slower (a.k.a., try to avoid looking up every word in the dictionary)
Generally, an extensive reading library has Japanese graded readers, children's books, manga, and other materials appropriate for Japanese learners. Interested in building your own extensive reading library? Please see our Japanese Extensive Reading List, which includes reading material categorized by difficulty level and genre.
